I’m in the Amsterdam airport…and I’m thinking about the details for the team that will be departing from the U.S. in a few hours. (An aside…I was on a KLM flight from Detroit to Amsterdam and I have never been on an international flight with so little leg room. KLM has started offering an Economy Plus section…and guess where they got that extra space they are offering! Yeah, they borrowed it from the regular economy section! I’m a little taller than average, but I don’t have serious problems with standard economy legroom…but this was tight! A very nice KLM stewardess apologized to me and allowed me to move to an interior aisle seat that had a vacant seat adjacent. A great relief. Anyhow someone told me all the European carriers are outfitting their planes similarly. We’ll see if that is true.) Back to the main idea… I left the U.S. a day early to make sure everything is in place for the team when they arrive. (We had a situation at this destination a few years ago…when we arrived at the small guest hotel where we had made our reservation told us that some guests would not move out of the rooms he had reserved for us…and there was nothing he could do. These are things that do not happen if you have reservations at 4 or 5 star hotels…but you probably don’t put your short-term teams in that level of accommodations either. Well…it was not ideal but we worked out the accommodations. We split some of the couples to make a men’s room and a women’s room and pulled in some cots…and did some other creative things to make it work. If you have led short-term teams, you also have seen similar breakdowns…and had to make similar adjustments. All to say, I’m trying to make sure a similar event doesn’t reoccur…which is why I’m arriving a day early.

An airport (in this case the Detroit airport) seems an appropriate place to launch a blogsite about mission travel. (Is blogsite two words?) My spellchecker thinks so. I’m not sure. Although I have considerable experience in missions and considerable experience in travel…until this moment, I have never written a blog entry (on a blogsite or a blog site…as the case may be). (If I mess up this first entry, show a little grace. I will get better.) I’m leading a short-term mission team. Actually I’m going ahead of the team by 24 hours to make sure everything is in order. Usually I facilitate these teams, but don’t travel with them. But once or twice a year I go along with a group…and it helps me appreciate the group leaders I work with during the year. This group will have 15 participants (counting me). The youngest is 16 and the oldest is approaching 70. They will come from 4 different churches in 4 different states–a somewhat different demographic than the usual short-term team. 5 of us have been previously to this somewhat out-of-the-way destination. 3 have had experience in a similar culture. 6 have had some international experience, but not in this culture. And one, in her words, has a “krinkly passport”…she’s never been out of the U.S. before. Some of the ones who have never been experienced a culture similar to that where we are going have expressed some nervousness…and one may not get on the plane. I will find out tomorrow. His family has been opposed to his going from the beginning and they have stepped up the objections as the departure day comes near. I will let you know if he shows up. –TKC
